Panel Discussion
21 February 2013
7 PM
African Artists' Foundation Gallery
54 Raymond Njoku Street
Off Awolowo Road
Ikoyi, Lagos
The panel will include a group of Nigerian artists and cultural practitioners whose work deals with the effects of technology, the Internet, the digital revolution, and social media, and the ways that it creates new paradigms for individual and collective world view. The panelists all work in image and Internet based practices, and all necessitate the existence of social media at the core of their project. Each panelist will discuss and present their project, followed by a panel discussion.
Ike Francis will discuss his project on “Netizens”, using parts of electronic circuit boards and used computer scraps to create portraits of Nigerian citizens who are undoubtably a product of their technologies.
Temitayo Ogunbiyi is a visual artist with an interest in contemporary channels of communication, and how human interaction transpires in public and/or virtual spaces. Temitayo will present her ongoing project that examines the status of human relations in the digital age. Her projects have been most recently exhibited in The Progress of Love exhibition at CCA, Lagos.
Uche Uzorka will discuss his project www.nigeriapastpresentandfuture.com, a collaborative work with artist Chike Obeagu that won First Place in Nigeria’s National Art Competition in 2011. The mixed media installation explores the vast changes occurring in Nigeria today by their articulation through information technology, digital images, and internet accessibility.
thanksthanksafrica, a fictional artist collective that exists solely on the Internet, will contribute a video-manifesto of appropriated images that speak to their aim in engaging social and political critique.
Etim Eyo will discuss his long term project entitled The Nigerian Nostalgia Project, an online digital archive of collected photographs comprised of images, video, sound bytes, press clippings, publicity stills, and various ephemera depicting scenes and people in Nigeria between 1960 and 1980, which started on Facebook and now has over 15,000 members.
Tintin Imevbore is the founder of iGroove Radio, the first online radio station in Nigeria that aims to revolutionize the way global audiences access music with a specific focus on Nigeria and the African continent. Based in Lagos, iGroove Radio provides a platform for unlimited music and interactive entertainment, spanning the domains of music, fashion, lifestyle, and art.
Joseph Gergel will discuss the new project Art Base Africa, an online database for contemporary African art and online scholarly journal, to be launched in 2013.
The panel discussion will be informal, initiated by project presentations by participating artists and followed by a group discussion of the connections and overlaps in their various bodies of work. The audience will be encouraged to actively take part and participate in the group discussion.
