Uche Uzorka: The Organic (Curator)

Goethe-Institute, Lagos, Nigeria

October 6-20, 2013

As curator for The Organic, I organized the first solo exhibition of Nigerian artist Uche Uzorka on behalf of the African Artists' Foundation and Goethe-Institut Nigeria.

Appropriating the signs and symbols of Nigerian street culture, Uche Uzorka encapulates the psychological enegery that defines the city of Lagos. Uzorka's work incorporates collage elements using found imagery, recycled materials, ink drawing, and painting techniques. His work suggests an unwillingness to conform to methods of civic control and an ambivalent attitude towards the urban environment.

Uche Uzorka was born in 1974 in Delta State, Nigeria. He trained in Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, majoring in painting. In 2011, Uzorka won first place for his collaboration with Chike Obeagu at the National Art Competition. The Organic is Uzorka's first solo exhibition.
