Nigerian photographer Uche James Iroha presents a new solo exhibition entitled Power and Powers at Omenka Gallery in Lagos, November 8 - November 22, 2014. This exhibition marks his first solo presentation since winning the Prince Claus Award in 2008. The collection of black and white photographs, exploiting the dark tonalities of the photographic medium, focuses on different aspects of power and their interconnectedness in Nigeria. In one thematic thread, Iroha looks at issues of electricity in Nigeria and its subsequent inequalities. In others, he explores power in its relation to government curruption and political abuse. Iroha's conceptual twist takes on the body as a metaphor for individual stuggle and persistence, often using autobiographical references such as x-rays and images of newborns to counter the series' more collective social agnst. The installation, set against black painted walls, becomes a labrynth of competing visual presence and absence.
