Organized in conjunction with the Lagos Black Heritage Festival, Wole Soyinka's play, "Beatification of An Area Boy," will run at Freedom Park, Lagos Island, April 21-23, 2015. Set during a military dictatorship, and written by Soyinka in 1990 during the Abacha regime, this play documents the life of an unusual "megadi" who works at an upscale shopping plaza. Featuring an eclectic mix of colorful characters and portraying the co-mingling of two different worlds within the city, Soyinka pinpoints the contradictory extremes of the city of Lagos. The play takes on a site-specific structure around Freedom Park, where the stage and audience move around as the story progresses. This serves as the Nigerian premier of Soyinka's play, where it was first directed by the author in Kingston, Jamaica with a group of disadvantaged youth.
